Do I need a building permit for a retaining wall in Victoria?
Generally yes, once the wall is over one metre high.
A permit can also be required under a metre where the wall retains a driveway, a structure or a boundary, or where it sits close to a building. The relevant building surveyor makes that call, not the builder and not the client.
This is where most retaining wall contractors stop. As a registered building practitioner the contract and the Home Warranty cover sit with us, and we liaise with your engineer and building surveyor through the permit, so you are not coordinating three parties on your own.
