Yarra Valley
Retaining walls across the Yarra Valley
Engineered and replacement retaining walls from Healesville to Warburton, built out of the yard in Lilydale by the same crew that drills, digs and builds the wall.
Most of the valley work is replacement
A large share of what we build through the Yarra Valley replaces a wall that has already given up. Timber sleeper walls put in decades ago are holding ground they were never designed to hold, and they fail the way timber walls usually fail: the posts go first, the wall starts to lean, and it moves a little more every winter.
We take them out and rebuild in concrete sleeper on galvanised steel posts, with footings to the engineered depth and drainage behind the wall. The drainage is photographed before backfill, because a wall that failed once almost always failed for want of it.
Work in the valley and the ranges
-
Yarra JunctionEngineered retaining wall and major site excavation. 20 m long, 2.2 to 3.2 m high, 250 m³ removed, with no truck access to the work area. -
Yarra GlenRetaining walls for a four unit subdivision. Every footing was drilled through very hard mudstone, which is where an in house rig and rock augers earn their keep.
-
Mount EvelynA tiered wall that had failed, replaced with an engineered wall 2 metres high in front of the house. We carried the building contract as the registered builder, and the only access was through the neighbour's driveway.
What the ground does here
Steeper ground, more rock and tighter access than the suburbs closer in. That is the work the business is set up for.
-
Hard ground
Rock and mudstone stop a light auger. The hammer and rock augers are ours, so hard ground changes the method, not the program.
-
Access
Single driveways, slopes above the house and neighbours on both sides. Access gets planned before a machine is booked, including working through a neighbour's property where they agree to it.
-
Rock and sleeper in one job
Sloping and rocky sites often need both. We build engineered sleeper walls and machine placed rock walls without bringing in another trade.
-
Built to the approved design
Walls over a metre, or carrying a structure or a driveway, generally need engineering and a building permit. We build to the approved engineering, and as a registered building practitioner we can carry the domestic building contract and insurance for the works.
Where we work in the valley
Healesville, Yarra Glen, Coldstream, Yarra Junction, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, Warburton, Seville, Wandin and Mount Evelyn. The yard is on Swansea Road in Lilydale, which puts most of the valley within a short drive for site visits.
Beyond the valley we build retaining walls across Melbourne, and take on excavation as work in its own right.
Send a photo of the wall and the fall
The address, a photo of the wall and what sits above it is enough for us to tell you whether it is a replacement, an engineered build, or not a job for us.
